Augmenting the Unseeable: Representation at the limits of perception

The project Mapping the Invisible asks what it means to make the imperceptible visible, and what responsibilities come with that act. Diatoms, the protagonists of the work, are single-celled algae. They are invisible to the naked eye, yet they are foundational to aquatic ecosystems and sensitive indicators of environmental health. This talk explores the project's central tension: translating organisms that exist at a microscopic scale into forms encountered at human or architectural scale through spatialised augmented reality, showing at the Namur Pavilion parallel to KIKK. Lauren Moffatt will discuss how questions of scale, visibility, and ecological attention shape the artistic decisions in the project, and how spatialised AR can function not just as spectacle but as a tool for drawing physical attention to overlooked, non-human forms of life essential to the ecosystems around us.

Explosions

From exploding lithium batteries and failing AI systems to rockets disintegrating mid-flight and electric vehicles catching fire, contemporary technologies are saturated with moments of rupture. Yet these failures are often framed as evidence of experimentation, ambition, and visionary thinking. Mirroring Silicon Valley's mantra, "move fast and break things," contemporary culture has come to equate destruction with innovation. Explosions operate both literally and metaphorically: they refer to the material volatility of contemporary technologies, but also to the political tensions and social unrest driven by deepening inequality and ecological collapse.
