About the work
MASQUES GAMANKÉ
In Masques Gamanké, however, the artist chooses never to show these objects directly. She makes negative plaster casts of the inside of the masks, then photographs these forms using the visual conventions of museum photography. It is no longer the mask that faces us, but its reverse, its hollow, the space normally occupied by a face. The object remains present without ever being fully revealed. These negative forms evoke histories and identities that have been lost, displaced or transformed through the Western gaze.
