    TBA 21

    TBA 21

TBA21 Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary is one of the leading international foundations for art and public engagement. The foundation’s vision and ethos are structured around two interrelated programme strands: the production of artworks with a long-term commitment to supporting artists’ careers (commissions), and the development of art-based projects that explore the fields of critical ecologies and social justice (research). TBA21 is based in Madrid, where it operates in partnership with the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum, and has other key centres of activity in Venice and Portland (Jamaica).

All of TBA21’s work is collaborative and driven primarily by artists and by the conviction that art and culture are integral components of social and environmental transformation and, ultimately, serve the cause of peace. For TBA21, art is a complex form of knowledge that draws on existing bodies of knowledge whilst, at the same time, revealing its boundless, imaginative and uncategorisable nature. Convinced that art has the capacity to act as a transformative force in society, the foundation explores new modes of production and presentation designed to catalyse social and environmental change. This new form of research urgently examines how artistic practices can create a space beyond art itself and intervene and act within the public sphere.
